If you did not already know or haven’t seen it, Atkins HS again has a school mascot, a camel named the Simon G. Last year, an energetic and talented group of students tried out for this position, and …. was one person chosen? Or more than one? And who is it? Just when you think you know who it might be, maybe you are right, and maybe you are not? One thing’s for sure; we’ll never tell!
The Atkins news team was able to gain an exclusive interview into the life and thoughts of the Simon G. You won’t just see our cool camel at football and basketball games, but at other events as well – even some academic competitions. They are excited to be a part of the school for years to come and was happy to answer some questions about their thoughts on the school and their new job.
Q: What is your favorite place or room at Atkins?
A: Definitely the football field, which is also known as The Desert. I think it's my favorite because, not only does it remind me of my home, but the atmosphere there during football games is always amazing and I love hanging out in the student section.
Q: Now that football season is over, what sport or activity are you most looking forward to watching?
A: Definitely basketball, I love going to the games and cheering on the team as well as keeping the fans as hyped up as I can. With that being said, I love all the sports here at Atkins, so don’t be surprised if I make a few surprise appearances at some of the other sporting events around the school this winter!
Q: Why did you choose Atkins?
A: Well, as you know, Campbell University is also the Camels, and they had lined up an interview with me a few days after my interview here. After meeting with the administration here and taking in a few games, I decided to cancel that trip to Campbell because I realized there was no better place to be than here at Atkins.
Q: What’s the secret to your skillful and deft dance moves?
A: Years and years of practice and training.
Q: Just how old are you, anyway?
A: That’s difficult to say, because it can only be measured in “camel years.”
Q: What do you do before going out and hyping up the crowd at games?
A: Well I always have to start with a nice plate of cacti, my favorite food, to energize me and get me ready. After that I go over the schedule for the games and remind myself of what I’m doing in each part. Then I go over the cheers for the game one more time to get ready. After that I head to the stadium or arena or wherever we’re playing ready and excited to cheer on Atkins!
Q: Obviously I have to ask a question, although I’m pretty sure you have the answer. What’s your favorite day of the week?
A: Well, as much as I absolutely love football and Fridays, I have to go with Hump Day since I AM a camel.
