A memorial portrait of former Atkins HS teacher Thomas “Tommy” Key was unveiled Monday, December 9 in an after-school ceremony. Drawn by senior Zaya McFarland, the picture is a tribute to Key, who died in July after a two-month bout with sudden onset pancreatitis. He was 59.
According to his obituary, “Tommy was a genuine, caring and authentic person who had the special gift of recognizing strengths in other people and encouraging everyone he knew. He was an avid reader, loved movies and took great pride in being an AP Psychology, English and American History teacher at Atkins High School, speaking of his students daily. He was a deep thinker, and thoroughly enjoyed reflecting and writing words of inspiration for himself and others.”
McFarland said, “I feel really honored to be able to create this for the school and for Mr. Key.” The chalk pastel portrait is now on display on an easel and then will hang in the Atkins media center.
