Reynolds annouces the 2025 inductees to the RJR Sports Hall of Fame

On February 4th, the Winston-Salem Journal ran an article telling about the eight new members of the RJR Sports Hall of Fame. They will be inducted at halftime of the Febuary 14 boys basketball game with Glenn.

The R.J. Reynolds High School Sports Hall of Fame will welcome eight new members with its 2025 Class during a ceremony on Feb. 14.

Brian Robinson, the girls basketball coach at Bishop McGuinness who graduated from Reynolds in 1990, is among this year’s inductees.

Robinson has led the Villains to 11 1-A state championships during his career, including nine-consecutive titles from 2006-2014, which is a state record.

The public is invited to the induction ceremony that will be held at halftime of the boys basketball game between Reynolds and Glenn in Bryson Gymnasium.

There will be a dinner for the inductees and current members of the R.J. Reynolds Sports Hall of Fame in the RJR Auxiliary Gymnasium before the game.

The members of the 2025 class:

Robert Boulware graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 2006. He was a member of the football and indoor and outdoor track-and-field teams. He was the 2005 and 2006 county champion in shot put and 2006 county champion in discus. He was the NCHSAA 4-A state champion in discus in 2006 and finished third in the shot put. Boulware competed for the North Carolina A&T University track-and-field team.

Philip Hightower is a 1962 graduate who was a starter at both offensive and defensive end on the football team. Hightower played in the Shrine Bowl and the East-West All Star Football game as a starter at both positions during his senior year. He was voted all-county, all-conference and all-american. He received the YMCA Triangle Award for individuals who best exemplify the spirit of a Christian athlete. He went on to be a two-year starter at Davidson.

George Phillips, a 1970 graduate, was a member of the cross country and track and field teams. Phillips placed 18th at the state meet in 1967, 13th in 1968 and second in 1969. He holds the sixth-best two-mile time in school history. In 1970, he was the one-mile county champion and came in second place in the two-mile at the State Championship. Following Reynolds, Phillips ran cross country and track for Appalachian State. He was named ASU’s Most Outstanding Cross-Country Runner in 1970, 1971 and 1974.

Brian Robinson graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1990. He was captain of both the JV and varsity baseball and basketball teams. Robinson was awarded All-City Basketball Athlete by the Winston Salem Chronicle in 1988 and awarded the RJR Student Athlete of the Year in 1990. Robinson received Central Piedmont 4-A All Conference honors in baseball in 1990. At the time of his graduation, Robinson’s .436 batting average was the third highest at Reynolds. He attended Appalachian State, where he played baseball. He later returned to Reynolds, coaching both baseball and basketball. He is currently the girls basketball coach at Bishop McGuinness and has won 11 1-A state championships, including nine straight from 2006-2014. He is also the founder of the Winston-Salem Stealers basketball organization, which he started in 1996. Robinson has been recognized for winning several local, state and national coach of the year awards and holds the state record for the most consecutive state basketball titles (nine).

Kenneth Shore is a 1954 graduate of Reynolds who was a member of both the baseball and football teams and was an all-conference and all-state selection He was the leading scorer among city high school players and was named to the All-Southern High School Football Team. Shore was voted Most Valuable Player in the Western Conference of 3-A Football and played for the West in the All-Star Game. Shore earned a football scholarship and went on to play at South Carolina.

Paris Smith graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 2003. She was a member of the indoor and outdoor track-and-field and basketball teams. Smith ranks fifth in school history for her time in the 200 meters, third in the 400, second in the 100 hurdles, second in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the triple jump. She was the 2001 County Champion in the 300 hurdles and was third in the 300 hurdles at the NCHSAA 4-A state championship. She was the Forsyth County champion in the 100 hurdles and 200 meters in 2002. Smith won the county championship in the 100 hurdles and 400 in 2003.

Dr. Robert Sprinkle, who graduated in 1950, was a member of the track and basketball teams. Dr. Sprinkle is being honored as a contributor to R. J. Reynolds Athletics for his loyal service as team physician for more than 20 years. In this role he not only provided medical care for student athletes by treating injuries and managing rehabilitation, but also educated students, coaches and parents about health and safety.

Randy Transou graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1971. He played intramural basketball and was a member of the golf team. Transou won the NCHSAA state championship during his junior year. He receiver a golf scholarship to Wake Forest.
