Career Technical Education

What is CTE?

Career Technical Education (CTE) in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools is a comprehensive program serving students in Grades 6-12. The mission of the CTE program is to prepare students to be world-class workers and citizens in our global economy. Upon high school graduation and the completion of a CTE sequence of courses, students may choose to enter the workforce, to enroll in a community college or enroll in a 4-year university.

Programs in CTE are developed to respond to the needs of the economy. To assist in responding to the needs, CTE programs partner with community leaders and organizations through advisory groups that provide support in planning, implementing and evaluating programs. The curriculum in each course is competency-based and provides instruction in the skills and knowledge needed for students to achieve success in their chosen Career Pathway.

The Forsyth County Public Library has a great online resource that provides us a wide range of helpful career information! Proquest’s Career and Technical Education Database is one-stop database for career information.

Not only does it provide basic descriptions, recommended educational pathways, and salary information for hundreds of specific job titles, but it also offers access to full-text articles/chapters from over 700 sources.

In addition, users have access to the full text of more than 30 ebook titles on career exploration. So, if you search for “Sous Chef”, you’ll get not only excerpts from reference books about that career, but also magazine interviews with famous sous chefs, industry news from trade publications, and interview tips for those seeking culinary careers.

The CTE Database covers Automotive, Building Trades, Computing, Cosmetology, Graphic Design, Healthcare, Photography, and many more career areas. The Career And Technical Education Database is available from FCPL’s Online Resources page under Jobs and Careers.
