Students from all over the district submitted original artwork for holiday cards, and each member of the board and Superintendent Tricia McManus chose one design from the elementary, middle, and high school level as winners. The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Education Foundation awarded their final grants of 2024 to WS/FCS educators during the most recent Board of Education Meeting. 17 teachers from 13 different schools were given funding for opportunities that provide enrichment in addition to the district-funded instruction and experiences. The foundation has provided the district's staff with over $50,000 in grants since it was established in 2023. Congratulations to our teachers!

Konnoak Elementary School hosted their first-ever Week of Giving last week as part of their United Way Campaign and in recognition of Hunger and Homelessness Week. Students brought in canned goods to support local families in need, eventually collecting 1,570 cans between all classes from pre-k through fifth grade. The cans will be given to Sunnyside Community Center in Winston-Salem. Congratulations on a job well done, Konnoak Cardinals, and thank you for thinking of others!

Diggs-Latham Elementary School Principal Dr. Cassandra Dobson was recognized as a 2024-25 North Carolina Friend of the Arts by the North Carolina Art Education Association at their state conference over the weekend. She was acknowledged for the accomplishment by the Board of Education during their meeting on Tuesday night, the same meeting where third grade music and dance students from her school were invited to perform. Dr. Dobson has earned a reputation for supporting arts in education by working with her staff and teachers to integrate arts into core academic classes, as well as lending her talents to a variety of shows at the school. Congratulations Dr. Dobson, and thank you for being a Friend of the Arts!

Clemmons Elementary School third graders had a blast learning about local history during a recent trip to Historic Bethabara Park. Located at the site of the first European settlement in the North Carolina Piedmont, Historic Bethabara offers students insights into trades like blacksmithing, pottery, candle making, and agriculture, as well as the history and culture of the Moravian settlers who founded what would become Winston-Salem. The trip was made possible by the America 250 grant program, which is sponsoring efforts to engage students in unique American history lessons ahead of the United States' semiquincentennial celebration in 2026.
