Board of Education Wrap-Up

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Board of Education approved a reduction in force during their meeting on Tuesday night. To balance the budget, 81 central office positions will be reduced. No school-based positions will be affected. 

Of the 81 impacted positions, 31 vacant or temporary positions will be ended; 33 employees may have their salary grade or months of employment reduced; eight employees will be transferred into vacant lateral positions; and nine employees will have their employment ended. The district’s goal is to assign as many of these employees to other vacant positions as possible. 

Human Resources will meet with impacted employees about reassignment and reclassification in the coming days. 

Also on the board’s agenda for the evening were: 

  • A performance by the Konnoak Middle School chorus 

  • A resolution acknowledging The Week of the Young Child for April 5-11 

  • Recognitions for the Hanes Magnet Middle School MathCounts team advancing to the state finals, Scholastic Gold and Silver Key art award winners, and teachers who earned state bonuses for ranking in the top 25% for math EOG scores 

  • Updates on world language, dual language immersion, and career and technical education programming in the district 

  • Approval of a North Carolina Center for Safer Schools School Safety Grant, emergency tunnel repairs at East Forsyth High School, HVAC installation contracts at Southwest Middle School and Hanes Magnet Middle School, and several other action items
