WS/FCS is considering the following changes to virtual instruction programming:

  • Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, the WS/FCS would phase out virtual instruction for grades 3-5 over three years. These changes will not impact existing Virtual Academy students, who may continue to attend online.

  • No new third grade students would be accepted in 2025-2026. This change is in part due to declining enrollment in Virtual Academy and because online instruction is not developmentally appropriate or optimal for learners in grades three through five.

  • Virtual programs would move to new schools. Virtual Academy students in grades 4-5 will become part of Cook Literacy Model Elementary School. Students in grades 6-12 will become part of Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy. Students, families and staff will have access to additional resources as part of these school communities.

  • Staff would continue in other positions in the district.

The changes would result in cost savings and improved efficiency for the district.

The Board of Education will be making a final decision about this February 11.
