WS/FCS is considering the following changes to virtual instruction programming:
Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, the WS/FCS would phase out virtual instruction for grades 3-5 over three years. These changes will not impact existing Virtual Academy students, who may continue to attend online.
No new third grade students would be accepted in 2025-2026. This change is in part due to declining enrollment in Virtual Academy and because online instruction is not developmentally appropriate or optimal for learners in grades three through five.
Virtual programs would move to new schools. Virtual Academy students in grades 4-5 will become part of Cook Literacy Model Elementary School. Students in grades 6-12 will become part of Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy. Students, families and staff will have access to additional resources as part of these school communities.
Staff would continue in other positions in the district.
The changes would result in cost savings and improved efficiency for the district.
The Board of Education will be making a final decision about this February 11.
