Displaced by Hurricane Helene? Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools welcomes your family!

If your student is unable to attend their local school due to the storm's impact and you have moved to our district, a social worker will help to get your student enrolled at a WS/FCS school.

Use the school locater tool to find the school nearest to your temporary residence. Contact the school directly to start the process.

WS/FCS staff will ensure families do not face barriers due to a lack of documentation. Our school social workers help identify students who may qualify under the McKinney-Vento Act, a federal law that ensures the rights of children experiencing homelessness. This might include students displaced by Hurricane Helene.

“WS/FCS is dedicated to offering additional resources to families impacted by the hurricane, which may include information on counseling services, food assistance, and housing support,” Deputy Superintendent Dr. Fabby Williams said. “We recognize the importance of acting swiftly to assist these families.”

If your student has difficulty adjusting or needs mental health services due to what they have experienced, the counselors, psychologists, school social workers and nurses on our Student Services staff are available to help them at school. The School Health Alliance can also help with both physical and mental health needs.

WS/FCS’s Project HOPE, under the School Social Work Department, can provide assistance needed beyond the school level. For more information, contact Program Manager for Project HOPE and Homeless Liaison Beth Ann Chambers at 336-703-4278.
