Elementary Health Education

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools follow the North Carolina Essential Standards for elementary health education.  Health education is delivered by a variety of individuals in the elementary school setting, including classroom teachers, physical educators, school nurses, child nutrition staff, guidance counselors, health department employees, and others in each individual school.  If you have questions about your child's health education, please contact the principal at your child's school.  

Middle School Health Education

The Healthful Living program in middle school is designed to integrate health and physical education in one class block each school year.  Students should learn to be aware of the important health risks for their age group and learn to appraise their own health status, healthful behaviors, and potential for health risks. Instruction should be provided based on the NC Essential Standards for middle school health, which addresses Mental and Emotional Health (MEH), Nutrition and Physical Activity (NPA), Interpersonal Communication and Relationships (ICR), Personal and Consumer Health (PCH), and Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs (ATOD).  In WS/FCS, board approved health education materials are provided to secondary teachers and those materials are differentiated for each middle school grade level.  Students should spend 25-50% of their health/PE class block in health education each year.  If you have questions about your child's health education, please contact your child's health/PE teacher or the principal at your child's school. 

High School Health Education

Students should realize, before leaving high school, that healthy behaviors are essential to their quality of life.  Students in our WS/FCS high schools take a Health course and an optional elective in Life Management Skills.  Life Management Skills has a locally developed curriculum and Health follows the NC Essential Standards for high school health education.  If you have questions about either of those courses, please contact your child's teacher or the principal at your child's school.
