CPR Graduation Requirement Information

Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in adults.
CPR doubles a person's chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest.
About 60% of heart attacks resulting in cardiac arrest occur in the presence of a witness who might be able to save the victim.
With the knowledge of these and other facts, the legislature passed Session Law 2012-197-House Bill 837 "an act to make successful completion of instruction in CPR available to all students with a plan to phase in completion of CPR instruction as a high school graduation requirement by 2015." In Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, the first cohort of students to face this requirement was the class of 2015. We have continued to teach CPR in our high school Life Management Skills course, as well as in our 8th grade Health/PE course. The following attachments can provide more information regarding the specific requirements of the law, accommodations that can be provided to students who need them, and what students are expected to know as a result of this instruction.
The parent letter below is shared with families who have juniors or seniors missing the CPR requirement. If you have a student who needs to complete the CPR requirement for graduation from a NC High School, you should be notified by someone at your student's school:
