WS/FCS Visual Arts Advancement Assessments

The current testing window is from Wednesday, January 3, 2024 - Friday, February 2, 2024.
*Please note that the assessments described below are for students wishing to advance beyond the normal progression of an arts discipline.  Essentially, it is for students wishing to "skip" a level of arts progression.

Students interested in taking the assessment should contact their current art teacher or Penny Freeland Email Penny Freeland prior to August 9, 2024 to request an application.*Late summer testing is handled on a per student basis and contact must be made with Penny Freeland.  Testing location for late summer testing: Administrative Center

Advancing to Intermediate Level
The Beginning assessment is designed for students wishing to advance into the Intermediate level of Visual Arts that have not had a complete K-8 progression in the Visual Arts.  (Students that have had a complete K-8 progression will automatically be enrolled in the Intermediate level arts course.) The Beginning assessment consists of (50) multiple choice questions that assess the student's mastery of the NC Essential Standards for Beginning Art.  Students that receive a score of 80% or higher will have demonstrated mastery and will be placed in the Intermediate level of art at their school.  (This assessment is administered by their current art teacher.)

Advancing to Proficient (Honors) Level
The Intermediate assessment evaluates the student's mastery of Intermediate Standards of Visual Arts.  The assessment is a digital portfolio of 8 artworks. Assessments are evaluated by a panel of WS/FCS Visual Arts teachers.  Students that have had a complete K-8 progression and are wishing to advance to the Proficient level (Honors) upon entry to High School should plan to take this assessment.  Students that have completed Beginning level coursework and are wishing to advance to the Proficient (Honors) level should plan to take this assessment.

Digital Portfolio (8 works)

  • Student portfolios should consist of (8) works of original art created by the student since the 6th grade. 

  • All portfolios should be submitted in digital form in a designated Google drive labeled with the student’s name, school, and grade level. The Google drive will be shared once the application is accepted.

  • A Microsoft Word document should accompany the portfolio with a listing of the artwork title, medium, dimensions, and date of completion.

  • Images should be formatted as .jpeg.

  • Artworks included in the portfolio should represent work in a variety of media.  Students are encouraged to include drawings, paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, and digital work.  Students are encouraged to show examples of both color and black and white work.

  • Portfolios are evaluated by a panel WS/FCS High School Visual Arts teachers using a standardized rubric.  Students that demonstrate mastery of Visual Arts Intermediate Standards in art production will receive a possible total score of 100.

Parents and/or Guardians will be notified by email with assessment results within thirty days of the testing date.
