Restorative Practices (RP) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) are closely related frameworks that seek to create supportive learning environments. As CASEL puts it:

"SEL is critical for both students and adults when working toward building community, resolving conflict, and repairing harm—all essential elements of restorative practice. With relationships and community at the heart of all RP, RP presents multiple opportunities to develop, practice, and reinforce the five social and emotional competencies." - Restorative Practices and SEL Alignment

SEL and Restorative Practices share some common characteristics. These include:

• Building respectful and welcoming environments and healthy relationships for both students and adults. 

• Using a whole school systematic approach of informal and formal classroom and schoolwide structures and practices.

• Requiring a coordinated strategy to integrate across all school contexts and meet the needs of the entire school community.

• Involving the acquisition and application of mindsets, attitudes, knowledge, and skills on the part of young people and adults.

• Preparing students for long-term success in life and to become responsible, caring members of a multicultural society.

• Promoting youth voice and striving to achieve positive outcomes for all students.
