Rachel's Challenge is an organization in the United States that exists to inspire and equip every person to create a permanent positive change not only in themselves, but in their schools, their businesses and communities. Rachel Joy Scott was the first person killed in the Columbine High School shooting on April 20, 1999. After her death, many students that Rachel reached out to shared stories with the Scotts about the profound impact her simple acts of kindness had on their lives; even preventing one young man from taking his own life. They soon realized the transformational effect of Rachel's story and started the non-profit organization that is Rachel's Challenge today.

Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools supports several Friends of Rachel clubs within schools as part of our efforts to promote positive school climate, reduce violence, and prevent bullying. Contact your Principal or Guidance Counselor if you are interested in joining or creating a Friends of Rachel club at your school.

Each year, WS/FCS presents Spirit of Rachel Awards to students at the elementary, middle and high school level who exemplify qualities based upon Rachel's Five Challenges:

• Looks for the best in others

• Dreams big

• Chooses positive influences

• Speaks with words of kindness

• Starts a chain reaction.

Students do not have to be a member of any group or club to be nominated for this award.
