Parent Information - Title I
WS/FCS Parent/Family Engagement
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Parent/Family Engagement Program ensures that Title I, Part A parent and family engagement regulations are met with meaningful and strategic actions to build parent/family and school staff capacity as mandated by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965, as amended by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015. Schools and districts must ensure that strong strategies are in place to: 1) build capacity to engage parents/stakeholders in an effective partnership with the school; and 2) share and support high student academic achievement.
Every Title I school is required to:
Work with parents to jointly develop a written parent/family engagement policy/plan
Distribute the parent/family engagement policy/plan to all parents and to the local community
Inform parents/families of the policy/plan and their right to be involved at an Annual Title I meeting
Offer flexible parent/family engagement meetings and family learning activities
Involve parents/families in planning, reviewing, and improving school programs
Work with parent/families to develop a school-parent/family compact that is designed to improve individual student academic achievement
Increase opportunities for parent/family engagement in the school by helping parents/families understand academic expectations and assessments
Provide materials and training for parents/families, and school staff, to foster greater parent/family engagement
Integrate activities with other federal and state programs
Title I schools must notify parents/families:
Concerning the school improvement status of their child's school
Regarding information on the level of achievement of their child in each of the state academic assessments
If their child has been assigned, or has been taught for at least four consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet the highly qualified definition
Their right to be involved in the planning and implementation of the Title I parent/family program in their school
Title I Parents at the Parent Leadership Institute
WS/FCS Parent and Family Engagement is an ongoing process that increases active participation, communication, and collaboration between parents, schools, and communities with the goal of educating the whole child to ensure student achievement and success.
