Equity Ambassadors

The Equity Ambassadors Initiative is now in its second year, with returning ambassadors leading action plans alongside their school leaders to drive meaningful progress. First-year ambassadors are actively building their capacity to support equity-centered initiatives within their schools. This growing network of dedicated educators is instrumental in fostering learning environments where all students have the opportunity to thrive.

The Office of Equity, Access, and Acceleration collaborates with departments across the district to create systemic changes that lead to continuous improvement. The goal is simple: ensure every student graduates with durable skills, as outlined in the NC Portrait of a Graduate, and is well-prepared for post-secondary opportunities. The policy and procedural shifts championed by the office help schools and departments close opportunity gaps, ensuring all students have access to the resources and support they need to succeed.

Chief Equity Officer Dr. Effie McMillian emphasizes the importance of collective effort in this work:

“Equity does not fall on one person in a district. It has to be the work of every district employee. It has to be the work that permeates across every school for us to truly achieve the positive outcomes we desire for our children.”

Because educators are deeply connected to the needs of their students, families, and colleagues, they are uniquely positioned to champion this work within their schools. McMillian underscores the importance of school-based leadership:

“It is critical that those who are closest to what is happening in the building—who deeply understand their students' needs—are the ones leading efforts to create opportunities for success. Their perspectives and engagement help us refine how we operationalize equity district-wide.”

Each school in the district has the opportunity to have at least one Equity Ambassador who participates in monthly professional learning, serves as a liaison between their school and the Equity Office, and supports ongoing equity-focused efforts. These ambassadors receive an $1,800 stipend over eight months and earn four CEUs for their participation.

With more than 50,000 students, WS/FCS recognizes that each learner has unique needs. Ensuring they have the tools and support necessary to succeed requires a collaborative, community-wide effort. The Office of Equity, Access, and Acceleration looks forward to continued partnership with educators, families, and stakeholders to accelerate positive outcomes for all students.
