Board of Education
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education is composed of nine members elected to four-year terms of office. Board members are elected from two districts within our county. District 1 elects two members, four are elected from District 2 and an additional three are at-large seats. Members of the board receive compensation equal to one half the amount paid to the county commissioners. The board acts only when meeting in official session with a quorum of five members. A majority of the members must be present and voting for a motion to pass. No one acts in the name of the board unless authorized by the board to do so.
While committee meetings are not broadcast, all regular meetings of the full Board of Education are broadcast live on our Cable2 website, and on Cable 2 via Spectrum Cable, on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, starting with a closed session at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the WS/FCS Education Building at 4801 Bethania Station Road in Winston-Salem. They return to the open/public session at 6:30 p.m. Committee meetings will continue to precede the regularly scheduled meetings and begin at 4:00 p.m. The Buildings & Grounds and Policy Committees meet on the second Tuesday. The Finance and Curriculum Committees meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month.
Superintendent
The superintendent is appointed by the board and administers the school system in accordance with board policy and state law. He/She manages the budget, supervises staff and students, and makes recommendations about the operation of the school system.
Public Participation
The public is invited to participate in all scheduled board meetings. All meetings are held at the Education Building, 4801 Bethania Station Road in Winston-Salem. The agenda may be found at the entrance table in the lobby, and the electronic agenda, which includes links to supporting materials, is available via this link. To speak to the board during a session, please register at the entrance table. Comments on agenda items, only, will be heard at the beginning of the meeting. The sign-up period for agenda items ends at 6:30, when the meeting starts. Public comments on any topic are also welcome and will be heard during the "Meeting Open to the Public" section on the agenda, which is at the end. The sign-up period for that comment section ends when the Board begins the "Action Items" portion of the agenda. Your remarks for both periods are limited to three minutes. Each speaker will be timed.
Although the board will listen to your concerns about individual school problems, it recommends first working with teachers and principals of those schools, who can resolve most problems. If you believe that a law, policy or rule has been violated, you should use the grievance procedure established by the board. Matters which cannot be resolved at the school level should be taken to the appropriate instructional superintendent, then to the superintendent before approaching the board.
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools endeavors to make all board meetings accessible to all people. If you require accommodation to attend or participate in a meeting, please allow five days advance notice and contact Lisa Sugg at 336-727-2816 or Email Lisa Sugg.
