2025 Volunteer of the Year Finalists

Heather Hosey

Heather Hosey

R. J. Reynolds High

Heather Hosey has worked as a PTA volunteer and president at Speas Global Elementary School, Paisley IB Magnet School, and Reynolds over the past eight years. Her activities have ranged from starting athletic clubs to putting on inclusive multicultural events to improving school infrastructure. She sincerely believes that every student, educator, and family deserves to feel truly seen, heard, and supported, and she reflects that belief in her work.

“Empathy isn’t just a trait – it’s my strategy,” Hosey said. “It allows me to approach decisions with heart and purpose, ensuring that policies, initiatives, and daily interactions reflect not just efficiency but genuine care. We’re all humans who are deeply deserving of love, support, and care.”

Cindy Miller

Cindy Miller

Kernersville Elementary

Cindy Miller is the president-elect of the Kiwanis Club of Kernersville, which supports literacy initiatives at Title I elementary schools in the Kernersville area. She retired from a corporate career after 37 years in 2022 and considered continuing as a consultant, but she felt that investing more in community service was the most rewarding thing she could do. She’s been blown away by how affirming the volunteer experience can be at Kernersville Elementary.

“Watching them become excited about reading and letting their imaginations soar is truly fulfilling,” Miller said. “I wanted to give back to the community, but I was amazed at how much I have gained in return. The children love and learn unconditionally, and their enthusiasm is contagious!”

Jackie Pierson

Jackie Pierson

Ibraham Elementary

Jackie Pierson led a long career in library services, including an 18-year stint as Director of Library Media Services for WS/FCS. She works on multiple school support and food insecurity relief programs at Ibraham, as well as helping Bookmarks bring more books and authors into classrooms. She’s thankful for opportunities to go back into the school, even after her retirement, because she prizes every smile on a student’s face.

“Seeing the students waving at me when I am in the halls of the school makes my day brighter,” Pierson said. “I hope that my smiling back at them makes their day a better one as well. The opportunities to volunteer at Ibraham Elementary School have enriched my life in more ways than I ever imagined.”

Nicole Serrin

Nicole Serrin

Caleb's Creek Elementary

Nicole Serrin is president of the Caleb’s Creek PTA and a theatre teacher with eight years of experience. During her tenure, she’s gained experience in organizing events, coordinating with local businesses, managing social media, and even overseeing playground equipment installation. Having been raised by a single mom who was always active in her life, she aspires to live up to her mother's example.

“Mom held down three jobs to make ends meet but was always present with her children and extremely involved in not only our lives, but the lives of her community as well,” Serrin said. “She instilled in me the importance of showing up for your children and community in all ways, especially education.”

Jeremy Strathman

Jeremy Strathman

Thomas Jefferson Middle

Jeremy Strathman has served Jefferson Middle School as a PTA president, a Spring Fling coordinator, and a volunteer in the office and media center over the past four years. He also volunteers in roles that support student athletes at Wake Forest University, Atkins High School, and the New Sherwood Swim Team. He hopes that his mentorship will make a pivotal difference in students’ lives and encourage them to be active, well-rounded citizens.

“A child needs to be in a comfortable, safe learning environment to soar to their potential,” Strathman said. “A happy, motivated child with proper support is one who will continue to want to attend school and be a positive force in their community.”
