Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS)

David H. Petree Elementary School implements a proactive approach to school-wide discipline. This initiative is meant to reinforce the positive behaviors of students doing what is expected of them as well as supporting students who need extra assistance to reach the school wide expectations of S.O.A.R.

PTA: Parent/Teacher Association

Petree Elementary has an active Parent Teacher Association, which will be holding meetings throughout the year. All parents, teachers and other interested persons are encouraged to join. Throughout the year you will see requests come home for volunteers for many of the events that are sponsored by both the school and the PTA. The PTA is a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families, and a strong advocate for the education and wellbeing of every child.

School Day

7:55am – 2:25pm

School begins at 7:55 a.m. It is important to be on time. Students may not be dropped off before 7:30 a.m. At 7:55, the tardy bell will ring and any student arriving after that time will be asked to sign in at the front office and receive a tardy slip. Any student arriving after 8:00 must have an adult check them in.

What do I do upon arrival to school?

Teachers will be in their class each morning by 7:30 to supervise you until class begins at 7:55 a.m., so you should go straight to your class when you get to school. If you arrive between 7:55 and 8:45, you should go to the breakfast kiosk to pick up your breakfast (if you are getting breakfast), then go directly to your classroom.

What is expected of me when I arrive?

I WILL …

➢ Walk along the sidewalk to enter the building.

➢ Enter only through the appropriate doors.

o Walkers and Car riders will enter through the door outside of the Music room.

Bus riders will enter through the bus ramp doors.

o All students will pick up their breakfast from the cafeteria kiosk at that location.

➢ Students will walk directly to class and request a hall pass if they need to leave

they need to leave the classroom

o For safety and accountability, students are NOT allowed to go to the restrooms before 8:00am, unless it is an absolute emergency and only then with a hall pass.

Breakfast

Breakfast will be served from 7:30 – 8:55. Students must arrive before 8:55 in order to receive breakfast. All students who arrive before 7:55 are expected to eat their breakfast in the classroom. All students eating breakfast must enter and get breakfast from their designated kiosk. Students MAY NOT go to their classroom prior to getting breakfast. Breakfast will not be served after 9:10. No exceptions unless due to the fault of the school such as a late bus.

What do I do if my child needs to leave early?

We want to take necessary precautions to ensure student safety and protection while at school. If you need to pick up you child early from school,parents and students must adhere to the following procedure:

Ring the bell at the front entry.
Someone in the the front office will come to the door to ask for your ID (please be sure to come with a valid form of Identification)
We will call your child out of class, and use the ID presented to sign your child out of school for the day.
Students will NOT be allowed to sign out after 1:50pm as this will overlap with dismissal. Instead families are asked to wait and receive their child at school dismissal.

*Note:Teachers and staff have been instructed that we are not allowed to release your child to anyone other than legal parents or guardians unless we have appropriate permission.

DISMISSAL

(In General)

➢ Students will continue to work at their desks on either paperwork; homework or teacher led daily concept reviews while waiting for their form of transportation to be called

➢ Students will not be traveling throughout the building past 2:00 without a hall pass or a written note from a staff member stating where the student is going and why

➢ No student will be allowed to visit the library, counselor’s office, gym, or any other classroom without written permission from that person past 2:00 pm

➢ Once dismissal has begun students will not be able to use the restroom or get water

➢ Student may not congregate in the classroom doorways during dismissal. They need to stay seated until called

➢ Students will not be allowed to move into the hallways unless their form of transportation has been called

➢ Students will move quickly and quietly thru the building not stopping for water or to use the restroom

➢ Students may not pick-up or wait for siblings, friends or relatives to come along. Their teacher will help them get to where they need to be.

➢ Students will not stop at classroom doors to chat with teachers or other students. They will move directly to their bus or designated area. Buses will not be held to wait for students who wander off.

Car Riders

➢ Car riders will be dismissed at 2:20

➢ All car riders in the building will exit down the main hall to the cafeteria.

➢ Car riders need to be escorted to the cafeteria by the grade level/classroom team member. They need to wait on the escort even if they are not there when car riders are called.

➢ Once in the cafeteria they will be seated by grade level where they will sit quietly. In order to speed up the process of leaving students will need to keep all of their belongings zipped up in their book bags.

➢ Any car riders not picked up by 3:15 will be escorted to the front office.

Walkers

➢ Walkers will be dismissed at 2:25

➢ Walkers will be escorted out the building by an office staff member.

➢ Walkers must leave the school grounds directly after being dismissed and are not allowed to remain to visit with others.

Van Riders

➢ Will be dismissed with the car riders and sit in the cafeteria.

➢ They will sit quietly until their van arrives. They will keep all belongings zipped up in their book bags.

YMCA Bus Riders

➢ Will leave the classroom once the announcement is made

➢ They will walk down the main hall

➢ They will wait with the employee from the YMCA at the doors leading out to the bus lot.

Bus Riders

➢ All bus riders will remain in the classroom until their assigned group is called ➢ Once the group is called, the students will enter the hallway on a voice level 0 and in a single file line

➢ The smaller students (K/1 and EC students) should load the buses first

➢ The teacher will monitor students as they leave the class to ensure they enter the hallway in a quiet orderly manner

What do I do if I need to ride a different bus home?

If you need to ride a different bus home with a friend or if you need to get off at a different stop, you will need to have your parent or guardian write a note which you should give to your teacher. If you are to be a car rider, we will also need a note from your parents or guardian, which tells us who will be picking you up from school. At times, parents call our office to communicate dismissal changes.

*PLEASE NOTE: FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS WE WILL NOT ACCEPT CHANGES IN TRANSPORTATION AFTER 1:00 PM, UNLESS IT IS AN EMERGENCY.

What happens if I’m absent?

To be considered in attendance, a student must be present in the school for at least one-half of the school day. The State Board of Education has established the conditions that shall constitute valid reasons for lawful absences:

1. Illness or injury

2. Quarantine

3. Death in the immediate family

4. Medical or dental appointments

5. Court or administrative proceedings

6. Religious observances

7. Approved educational opportunity

IMPORTANT: Parents are required to send a note to school stating the reason for the absence within 2 days of the student’s return to school following the absence. If the student does not turn in a note from their parent within 2 days of returning to school following the absence, the absence will be coded as unexcused. Only written documentation is acceptable. Please include the following information:

• YOUR CHILD’S NAME

• DATE(S) OF ABSENCE OR TARDINESS

• SPECIFIC CAUSE OF ABSENCE OR TARDINESS

• PARENT SIGNATURE

What should I wear to school?

Petree is NO LONGER SMOD (Standard Mode of Dress) school. Although the dress code has changed, students are still expected to maintain appropriate dress for the school day and activities.

The following are not allowed:

Flip flops,slides,slippers
Bare midriffs
See-through or ripped clothing
Hats & caps, hoods or head scarves (worn in the building)
Coats (worn outside of the classroom)
Short shorts or dresses/skirts (longer than fingertip length)
Saggy pants (must wear a belt if pants are too big)
Spaghetti straps
Clothing advertising alcohol; tobacco; illegal substances; inappropriate/ explicit language or graphics.

The office will call home for a change of clothes or provide clothing from the clothes closet (just for the day) for students not adhering to the stated dress code. If students continue to report to school with inappropriate dress administrative actions will be taken including, but is not limited to, lunch/recess/after-school detention.

*FOR SAFETY REASONS, tennis shoes (“sneakers”) are required for participation in PE classes and should be worn during recess/playground activities.

What should I do if I have to take medicine during the school day?

You cannot carry any kind of medication with you while you are at school unless the principal approves it. If you need medicine at school, have your parents do the following:

1. Your parent or guardian must complete, sign, and return to school a Winston. Salem/Forsyth County Schools Medication form to

authorize our staff to give you any prescription or non-prescription medication. The school nurse can give you this form.

2. If you need to take a prescription medication for longer than two weeks, your doctor must also sign the Medication Form.

3. Your parents or guardians must make sure that all prescription medications are in the original container from the pharmacy. These medications will be administered according to the physician’s instructions.

4. All non-prescription, over-the-counter medications must be in the original container, which includes your name, the name of the medicine, unit dosage, and instructions for us to give you the medicine. Your parents must specify the exact time a medicine is to be given. School personnel will not give medicine on an as needed basis. Exceptions to this rule will be made on an individual basis if you have a special health problem. The school nurse, in coordination with your physician, will approve exemptions.

5. Your parents must send new, properly labeled containers whenever medication changes are made.

6. If you no longer need a certain medication, your parents need to make arrangements to take the medicine home.

School guidelines for student medication are consistent with the Board of Education Policy #5141.

The school cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen items.

How will my parents and I find out what is happening at

David H. Petree Elementary School

Your teacher will send home our weekly “Tuesday Packet” with information from our school. Your parents may also visit our school and your teacher’s website. We will send “Alert Now” phone calls with updates when necessary. Teachers may also communicate through

Class Dojo. Occasionally, we will send other notices home to your parents.

It will be your responsibility to give this information to your parents.

Bullying

Students shall not bully another student.

The term “bully” means: the repeated and/or deliberate verbal and physical abuse of a student by one or more students.

This aggressive behavior is unwelcome, unprovoked and intended to do emotional harm. It generally occurs in a context where there is a real or perceived imbalance of power, physical or social, between the bully and the victim. Types of prohibited bullying behaviors include but are not limited to, the following:

a. Physical bullying includes the repeated and deliberate making of obscene gestures, pushing, shoving, hair pulling, and any other unwelcome physical contact intended to create an intimidating and hostile environment.

b. Verbal bullying includes acts such as:

(1) Hurtful name-calling, teasing or intimidating.

(2) Defaming or spreading false rumors about another person to cause them to be disliked, humiliated, or disrespected by their peers.

(3) Persuading, encouraging or leading other students to exclude or socially isolate the victim in order to cause emotional harm.

(4) Extorting money, property or services from another student.

(5) Making derogatory, demeaning or hostile comments about another student’s race, disability, ethnicity, or gender.

**Students are encouraged to report incidents to their teacher. All incidents will be handled in accordance with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Guidelines for Discipline – AR 5131.**
