Occupations: Respiratory Therapist, Healthcare Support Worker, Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurse, Medical Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Registered Nurse 

The following courses are pre-requisites for the Health Science Major:

  • Health Science 1 (Human Body Systems in our biomedical major is equivalent credit for this course)

Focus on human anatomy, physiology and human body diseases and disorders, and biomedical therapies. Explore health care careers within the context of human body systems. Projects, teamwork, and demonstrations serve as instructional strategies that reinforce the curriculum content. English language arts and science are reinforced.   

The course helps students expand their understanding of financing and trends of health care agencies, fundamentals of wellness, legal and ethical issues, concepts of teamwork, and effective communication. Students will learn health care skills related to the Health Science Career Cluster pathways. American Heart Association guidelines will be used for CPR and first aid training. This course contains a supplemental clinical internship. Language arts, mathematics, and communications are reinforced in this course. HOSA activities support networking with health care professionals through Volunteerism. 

The following course must also be taken to complete the major:

Explore the role of a Nurse Aide as defined by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, and the Health Care Personnel Education and Credentialing Section. 

Perform nurse aide skills to care for patients and residents in a healthcare clinical setting. 

Build communication skills and learn to function as a healthcare team member. 

Gain the knowledge, skills, and industry credentials for careers in the Healthcare Professional pathway. 

*The North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON) recommends students are 16 ½ on the first day of the Nursing Fundamentals and Practicum class. Our students have completed their clinical hours at Arbor Acres Retirement Community as well as Salemtowne Retirement Community.

*Internship and apprenticeship participation outside the school learning environment would require the student to have completed credentialing before the internship and apprenticeship experience.

*Wake Forest School of Medicine (below) hosted our students as one of several field trips that were part of our 2024 summer North Forsyth Camp Med. Students utilized ultrasound equipment and practiced delivering babies with mannequins (bottom photo).
