What School Counselors Do... 

Middle school students are characterized by rapid physical growth, curiosity about their world and an emerging self-identity. Middle school counselors have an impact on these years by implementing a school counseling program and collaborating with school staff, parents and the community to create a safe, respectful learning environment whereby young adolescents can maximize personal and academic achievement. Middle school counselors enhance the learning process and promote academic, career and social/emotional development. School counseling programs are essential for students to achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set informed career goals and realize full academic potential to become productive, contributing members of the world community. Middle school counselors hold a master’s degree and required state certification in school counseling. Maintaining certification includes ongoing professional development to stay current with education reform and challenges facing today’s students.

What School Social Workers Do... 

School Social Workers reach out to students and their families to overcome barriers that interfere with school adjustment and success. They work with individual students, small groups and families in schools, in homes and in the community. The student and family participate with the social worker to assess their needs, develop and implement an intervention plan, and involve appropriate school and community resources. Barriers in the lives of students include: attendance issues; child abuse, neglect and dependency; trauma, grief and loss; poverty and homelessness; family conflict; domestic violence; delinquency; gang involvement; learning problems and developmental delays; teen pregnancy and parenting needs; and other economic and behavioral issues.

What School Psychologists Do... 

School psychology is the specialty area within the profession of psychology which concerns itself with applying the knowledge and research of psychology to improve the learning and education process within schools. The focus is upon the educational development of individual children, their skills and abilities, and the social and emotional factors which affect their learning process in the classroom.
