Hello, my name is Dr. Jamal Crawford, and I am honored to be the second principal of Flat Rock Middle School! This is my 27th year in public education, all but one have been in North Carolina. I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I received by B.A. in History, and my master of school administration (MSA). I received my Doctorate in Educational Leadership in 2013.
I began my career in education as a high school teacher, teaching US history, Civics & Economics, and IB History of the Americas at Independence High School, in Charlotte, NC (Go BIG I!). I was able to earn my MSA as a North Carolina Principals’ Fellow (Class VI) and completed my educational internship at East Lincoln High School. My first administrative job was as an assistant principal at Eastway Middle School. My first principalship was at Northridge Middle School, both in Charlotte. I come to Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools after having served as the principal of Kirkman Park Elementary School, one of two Spanish immersion elementary schools in Guilford County. I have had the privilege of serving as an elementary, middle, and high school principal.
I am a native of Boston, MA, but moved to Charlotte, North Carolina at the start of high school, where I graduated from Harry P. Harding High School on Charlotte’s west side. I enjoy traveling, and being the father of a son, seven. I like to try cooking new recipes. I love to work out as much as I enjoy kicking back with a good book. When things really get stressful, I will jump on the motorcycle and just ride…or make my way to the local airfield for a couple of parachute jumps. My passion is to build a school where students and staff are excited to come to school every day; where students can see the endless possibilities ahead of them and where teachers are unafraid of the unknown. We cannot know what the future holds for our scholars, but we must prepare them for those unknown possibilities. Let’s get it done Flyers!!
