What should I expect at the DMV?

Written knowledge 25 question test; you must get a minimum of 20 correct questions.
Oral test on 12 road signs

What is Graduated Licensing?

Teenagers between the ages of 15 & 17 must go through a process called graduated licensing before receiving full driving privileges in North Carolina.
This involves STRICT requirements for teen drivers to gain the on-the-road experience necessary to drive a vehicle with no supervision and minimal restrictions.

What are the Levels of Graduated Licensing?

Level 1: Supervised operation of a Class C vehicle for the first six months.
Level 2: Unsupervised driving from 5 AM to 9 PM and to/from work or any volunteer fire, rescue or emergency medical service.
- A supervisor is REQUIRED after 9 PM until 5 AM
- Complete & log at least 60 hours of driving including 10 at night. No more than 10 hours per week.
- Provide proof of liability insurance coverage
Level 3: Unsupervised driving at any time.
- Complete & log at least 12 hours of driving including 6 hours at night.

Use of mobile devices or other additional technology associated with a cell phone is prohibited for all three levels.
