Preview of the Jan. 24 Board of Education Meeting

JANUARY 23, 2012 - The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education will meet Tuesday as part of its regular schedule. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of the Education Building, 4801 Bethania Station Road, Winston-Salem, N.C., 27105.

The board is scheduled to recognize:
  • Patty Jo Sawvell, a local author and school supporter.
  • the Rural Hall Area Business Association for its support of Rural Hall Elementary.
  • Victoria Allread of Reagan High School for winning the state 4-A championship in women’s golf.
  • North Hills Elementary School for being the first WS/FC school to receive the federal Energy Star designation.
  • Forest Park Elementary and Philo Magnet Academy for being named 2011 Signature Schools by the Piedmont Triad Education Consortium.
The board also is scheduled to discuss:
  • a report on college scholarships earned by students in 2010-11.
  • a contract with BELL Scholars to provide summer school for elementary and middle schools this summer.
  • approval of the merger of Hill and Philo middle schools.
  • giving final approval to revisions to Policy 3240: Grant Funding. One revision would require grant requests to local foundations to first be reviewed by the Grants Administration Team. The other revision requires requests to go before the team regardless of the grant amount, rather than just those more than $5,000.
  • giving final approval to a revision to Policy 3250.2: Student Fees 2011-12. The revision would increase the fee for full-day Music Summer Enrichment from $380 to $400.
  • an amendment to a contract with Public Consulting Group, Inc.
  • granting two waivers to Policy 1330: Use of School Facilities. Kids of Childhood and Cancer and the Public Housing Authority State Athletic Conference have both asked for waivers for upcoming events.
