SMOD

It is our goal to provide the best education possible for your students. We want all students to be well-prepared as they go on to college, technical school, or the world of work. This year, as we have looked at ways to improve the education at our school, we have found that clothing is a major distraction.Teachers spend too much valuable class time working to enforce dress code to keep the learning climate appropriate in the classroom.

This year we have a Standard Mode of Dress for all Atkins staff members and students alike. This is more professional attire that will enhance the academic climate at Atkins. Clothing below is more reasonable in cost than many name brand items students currently wear. It enhances the safety at our school, and it eliminates gang colors from our school. It helps keep our school focused on academics.

Basic guidelines are listed below. Modifications for the 2012-2013 school year are listed in maroon.

Colors are khaki (tan/beige) or black. Denim in these colors is allowed, but black denim is not recommended for economical reasons.  After several washings, it frequently fades to gray, which is not an allowed color.

Garments worn above the hipbone. No sagging.

Skirts, shorts, or jumpers must be worn at knee length or longer. (Capri pants are also appropriate.)

Shirts

Collared shirts are allowed in long or short sleeves (not sleeveless).

Colors are white, black, khaki (tan/beige), maroon (or colors in the maroon spectrum from deep maroon to pale pink), purple (or colors in the purple spectrum from deep purple to pale lavender), and gold (or colors in the gold spectrum from deep gold to pale yellow).

Shirttails longer than wrist-length must be tucked in.

Shirts must be solid in color.

Other Garments

Light outer garments worn in the building during the school day (such as vests, sweaters, light jackets, or sweat shirts) must be a solid color of white, black, maroon/pink, purple/lavender, yellow/gold, or khaki (tan/beige).

Layered garments must also be a solid color of white, black, maroon/pink, purple/lavender, yellow/gold, or khaki (tan/beige).

Other Considerations

Oversized, undersized, and skintight garments are not allowed.

Cargo pants are not allowed (safety issue).
