As superintendent of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, my top priority is to ensure that we are providing the best educational opportunities to the 53,400 students who attend our schools. High student achievement and academic growth - provided in a nurturing, caring environment - will help our students reach their full potential and prepare them for life after high school.
We are fortunate to live in a community that values public education and understands that teaching and training our youth is a shared responsibility. As educators, we are keenly aware of our special responsibility and accountability as we prepare the next generation of citizens to lead our society. It is vitally important to keep staff members, students, families and the community informed about the progress we're making, districtwide and school by school.
The Report Card material included on this website includes information about our successes, our challenges and other information such as class sizes, attendance, school safety, instructional resources, teacher quality and more. You can view a snapshot of any school in the district, or you can see how the district as a whole is performing.
Our students are making gains in academic achievement. The district’s four-year graduation rate hit an all-time high at 80.9 percent, exceeding the state’s average. In the 2011-12 ABCs of Public Education program, 13 of our schools earned North Carolina 's top recognition for student performance as "Honor Schools of Excellence.” Another 11 schools were named "Schools of Distinction." Across our school system, 68 percent of our students in grades three through eight were performing at grade level in reading, and in math, 82 percent of our students were performing at grade level.
Additionally, with a progressively more diverse population, the district met 76 of 86, or 88 percent, of its annual measureable objectives under the federal No Child Left Behind legislation in the 2011-12 school year.
Please take time to review our Report Card information on this website. On behalf of our students, staff and Board of Education, thank you for your support and commitment to Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.
