Winston Salem /Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS) is located in the central Piedmont region of North Carolina. The school district operates 43 elementary schools, K-5; 18 middle schools, grades 6-8; and, 17 high schools, grades 9-12, in over 223 structures with a vintage that ranges from 1926 to 2009. The district serves more than 51 thousand students and is growing at a rate of between two and three percent per year. During the past ten years, the facilities and construction department has completed more than $350 million in new construction, renovations, replacements, technology, and capitol improvement projects which bring the total district square footage to 7.5 million. The department has the responsibility to recommend and select land, architects, consultants, and contractors, and to establish with our Board of Education district programs and standards of products and programs. Representatives of our department meet with the Board of Education and public to determine district needs and identify funding sources as well as prepare bond packages for authorization by our local County Commissioners. We prefer to use the design-bid-build method for construction. In the 2006 Bond, we are scheduled to complete the construction of eight new schools, four replacement schools, six school renovations and additions and the replacement of boilers, roofing, and other improvements that total an additional $250 million.
