Ashley Elementary seeks to educate and nurture all students in every facet of their elementary school experience. The faculty, staff, and administration are united in their vision of fulfilling Ashley’s mission through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme offers a rigorous academic program that is focused on inquiry-based learning. The curriculum integrates the educational research, practice, knowledge, and experience of international schools with theCommonCoreStateStandards and theNorth CarolinaEssential Standards. Students develop their abilities to ask questions and become involved in the concerns of the global community. By attracting a diverse population to the magnet program, Ashley Elementary provides a rich environment that enables students to learn through the IB philosophies andto attain the goals of the International Baccalaureate Program, whichincludean authentic global awareness, and an understanding and respect for various cultures, ethnicities, and talents found in the world’s communities.

A significant and distinctive feature of the IB Primary Years Programme is the organization of curriculum into six transdisciplinary themes. These six themes of global significance create a transdisciplinary framework that allows students to “step up” beyond the confines of learning within traditional subject boundaries and explore the interconnectedness of each subject.

The six transdisciplinary themes are:

1.     Who we are

2.     Where we are in place and time

3.     How we express ourselves

4.     How the world works

5.     How we organize ourselves

6.     Sharing the planet
