Welcome to ESL at Parkland Magnet High School!
 
 

Classroom Information and Biography:

ESL students at Parkland are from many different countries.  Some students are brand new to to the United States and others have been here longer.  This is the eighth year that Parkland has had an ESL program. 

Ms. Reel and Ms. Arnold (from U.S.) teach the ESL classes.  Mr. Brown (Spanish speaker) and Ms. Jarman are the ESL assistants.

Curriculum and Resources:

In the ESL classes, students work on building vocabulary, improving grammar, developing study skills, refining litercay skills, and we work on other skills.

ESL 1 classes use the Keys To Learning textbook, the New Oxford Picture Dictionary, and other resources.  ESL 3 classes use novels, grammar resources, and other materials.

Points of Interest: 

Currently, we have students from China, Vietnam, Pakistan, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico.

COMPETENCY GOAL 1: LISTENING - The learner will comprehend spoken English in a variety of personal, social, and academic contexts.

COMPETENCY GOAL 2: SPEAKING - The learner will communicate in appropriate spoken English in a variety of personal, social, and academic contexts.

 COMPETENCY GOAL 3: READING - The learner will comprehend written English in personal, social, and academic contexts from print and non-print materials.
