Turnitin.com Requirements and Instructions |
The English Department of Mt. Tabor High school requires students to upload papers such as the summer reading project and research papers, as well as other teacher-designated assignments, into Turnitin.com.If a student does not upload an assignment into Turnitin.com, it will not be graded, even if the student has physically turned in the assignment to the teacher. This is intended as a tool to help students check their own work and for teachers to make sure that original work is being submitted by students. For a research paper, for example, students can upload their paper and check the report to make sure that they are correctly paraphrasing their sources. Then, they can correct any areas highlighted and re-submit the paper. Often, a student's paper will be returned with parts highlighted by Turnitin.com, which indicates an exact match to a source, either on the Internet, or within the Turnitin.com database which consists of all papers uploaded from its national and even its international locations. Teachers are committed to examining reports carefully for any discrepancies, for sometimes, it is acceptable for a student to have part of his or her paper highlighted, especiallly if it is a documented direct quote. However, when large portions of the paper are highlighted, it is often an indication that much of the text has been plagiarized from another source. In this case, the teacher will examine the report, talk to the student, call the parents, and follow the disciplinary procedures set forth in the Mt. Tabor High School Honor Code (which is in the student handbook and can be downloaded below). Teachers will all be posting the codes and passwords for their classes on their websites for you to upload your summer reading assignments.
