Parent Advisory Council
October 18, 2011
1. Dr. Martin called the meeting to order, and Donald Dunn gave a brief welcome.
2. Kim Morrison, the director of federal programs and strategic planning, gave a presentation about the school system's magnet schools. With the addition of magnet programs at Brunson and Konnoak elementary schools and John F. Kennedy High School this year, the system has 18 magnet schools, with seven at the elementary-school level, six at the middle-school level and five at the high-school level.
3. Dr. Martin led a discussion about the high school schedule being used for the first time this year. It uses a predominantly block schedule, with some classes finishing at the end of each semester and some classes being taught on alternating days and ending at the end of the school year.
4. Theo Helm, the director of Marketing and Communications, showed six sets of five days that would would be added to the 2012-13 calendar. The General Assembly added five student days to the school year by converting teacher workdays to student days. Because state law still mandates that school start Aug. 25 or later and end by June 10, the days must come between those two dates. The Board of Education is scheduled to choose the days at its Oct. 25 meeting. You can see the calendar and options by clicking here.
The next meeting is Nov. 15 in Room 219 of the Education Building. For more information, please call the Office of Marketing and Communications at 727-2696.
