   Donald L. Martin, Jr., Ed.D.


Don Martin is a native of Athens, Georgia. He received his undergraduate degree in Physics from Duke University, his Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Mathematics from Duke University, and his doctorate degree in Educational Administration from the University of Kentucky. His career in education began in 1973 as a math and physics teacher in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Dr. Martin has been Superintendent of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools for the past 19 years. Prior to his coming to Winston-Salem, he served as superintendent of two school systems in Kentucky and the Rowan-Salisbury School System in North Carolina.
 
Among his honors, he was named 2011 North Carolina Superintendent of the Year. Dr. Martin was recently invited by the US Department of Education to present at its Conference on Advancing Student Achievement through Labor-Management Collaboration in Denver, Colorado.

Dr. Martin is married and has three grown children — and two very special granddaughters, Delanie Beth and Sidda Leigh. His wife, Rita, is the guidance director at North Forsyth High School.
