  • Evaluating Bulletin Boards

Posted by Crystal Gregory at 9/14/2010 8:00:00 AM
Planning appropriate bulletin boards is a vital part of your Early Childhood Experience. As discussed, a bulletin board is a vehicle of communication for everyone who enters the environment where it is displayed. Not only does it make a room aesthetically pleasing, it serves as a way to convey philosophies, display concepts, and can also be a method of interactive teaching if done appropriately.

You board MUST be planned. there are no ifs, ands, or buts about that! How much space do you have? What are you wishing to convey or display? Who will see this board? How can you make it as visually pleasing as possible?

You may want to as yourself the following questions as you look at your planned bulletin board. evaluate yourself truthfully. For each question would you say that you need improvement, your plan is acceptable, or commendable. Remember in all things we shoot for excellence!
    1. Would the board complement the classroom activities?
    2. Does the board stimulate the children's development?
    3. Does the board contribute to the children's development?
    4. Does the board attract and hold attention?
    5. Is the board free of unnecessary detail?
    6. Is the organization of materials clear and simple?
    7. Can I look at your board and leave with the "I got it"...or will I have questions about what you were trying to convey?
    8. Is the board in good taste in both design and material?
    9. Are the figures elitist in proportion to one another?
    10. If human figures are uses, do they represent people of various cultural and ethnic groups, genders, and ages?
    11. Are safe materials and attachments used?

  • Portfolios

Posted by Crystal Gregory at 9/13/2010 9:00:00 AM

A type of performance assessment that is frequently used by those in the teaching and/or early childhood profession is the portfolio. A portfolio is a selection of your materials that document your performance over time. Students often select their best work samples to showcase their achievement. These items might provide evidence of employability skills as well as academic skills. Some of the items that a student may choose to include in a portfolio are:

    • Work samples (including photographs, videotapes, assessments, etc.) to show a mastery of specific skills
    • Writing samples that show communication skills
    • A resume
    • Letters of recommendation that document specific career-related skills
    • Certificates of completion
    • Awards and recognition

While the portfolio is usually assembled at the culmination of a course to provide evidence of learning, the student must be meaningful in gathering the needed components. The portfolio, once it is complete, is your property and should remain in your possession to be used for interviews with employers, college application interviews, and any other environment that you are asked to showcase your skills or abilities.

A portfolio can be a powerful tool. It will require you do some self reflection and self assessment. Dont see this as a burden or strenuous course requirement, see it as a tool that may set your apart from another applicant
