Welcome to Honors or AP US History!

If you have signed up for my class it means that you have elected to take US History at the Career Center rather than at your home school. I would like you and all of my other students to know that I am very excited to be teaching in Winston-Salem and at the Career Center in general. On my page I will tell you a little bit about myself and about my teaching philosophy.

My full name is Alexander Henry French and I grew up right here in Winston Salem. In fact I attended school at the career center (admittedly this was a while ago.) While there I had several of the teachers still teaching.  I attended college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and after a short stint as an office gopher and a traveling knife salesman I went back and got my Master's degree at UNC as well.  I then taught for a fair number of years in Durham at Hillside New Tech. At the end of last year I decided to move back to Winston Salem to be closer to my family and here I am.

I am an avid practitioner the of Martial Arts (specifically Tae Kwon Do) as well as interest in American History (which is appropriate considering my area of teaching.) I also love reading science fiction and anything involving current events.  In my spare time I enjoy running and long walks on the beach.

My teaching philosophy is entirely functional. While I believe that as Americans it is important that my students are informed about their heritage it is more important that they are able to examine history in a critical fashion and that they are able to communicate their ideas clearly and logically. As such we will be writing on a regular basis and I will be giving my students regular feedback on how they communicate their ideas.

If you have any questions I try to make myself available when I can, please do not be afraid to ask.
