General High School Graduation Requirements:

 

The North Carolina Department Of Instruction has developed new high school graduation standards for the class of 2013 and beyond. The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System has used the new NCDPI standard to modify it's graduation requirements. A multi-page flyer, explaining these new requirements usually is sent home with all current 8th grades by the end of January.

 

Beginning with the 2009-2010 ninth grade class, all students will be expected to meet the requirements outlined under the Future-Ready Core Course of Study, unless they have an IEP indicating that the Occupational Course of Study is more appropriate. To graduate with a Future-Ready Course of Study diploma, students will need to:

 
Breaking News October 2010:  The North Carolina Board of Education has eliminated the requirement for completion of End-of-Course tests, as outlined below, however, the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education has not determined if they will retain this requirement for it's students.
 

* meet the course and credit requirements

* earn passing scores on five required end-of-course tests: Algebra 1, Biology, Civics and Economics, English 1 and U.S. History

 

Students will need to complete four total elective units, two electives must be any combination from Career and Technical Education, Arts Education or Second Languages. The remaining two elective credits can be taken from one of the following areas of focus: Career and Technical Education, ROTC, Arts Education or any other subject area (e.g. mathematics, science, social studies, English).
 

Students will need four units each of Mathematics, English, Social Studies and Science.  Two units of Health/Physical Ed and Life Management Skills are also required. (9th grade: 1/2 unit PE and Life Management; 10th grade: 1/2 unit of PE and Health) Dance can substitute for PE I or PE II; and JROTC can substitute for PE II.
