Middle School Promotion Standards

For promotion from grades 6, 7, and 8; students must pass three of the following four core subjects each year: math, science, social studies, and language arts, and 75 percent of all ENCORE courses. If language arts is split into reading and writing classes, a student must pass 4 of 5 core classes. A student may substitute a passing grade in the fourth (or fifth) core subject for an encore course which equates to a year of instruction.

Starting in 2012
The Reading End of Grade results are computed into students final grades for Language Arts.  For the Math EOG, it is computed in as a test grade for Algebra and Geometry students, and part of the final grade for other math students.  The Science EOG score is computed into the final grade for 8th grade students.

Gateways for promotion to 9th grade were eliminated by the North Carolina State Board of Education in October 2010.
