Welcome to 6th grade math!
I'm glad you took some time to stop by. For anyone that I haven't personally met, my name is Melissa Guy and I am your child's 6th grade math teacher on the Architect Team. I am very excited to have the priveledge of teaching your son or daughter this year and look forward to getting to know them better.
A little about me...
I grew up in San Antonio, TX where I met my husband, went to college and started my family. As a graduate of the University of Texas my burnt orange colors typically clash with the favored shades of blue found here in North Carolina, but I'll try not to hold that against you Carolina/Duke fans. (LOL) I have two children - Jared is a 7th grader and Emily is in 4th and a dog named Sadie. We moved to Kernersville 6 years ago when my husband took a position with Volvo Trucks and I love being a part of this community so don't be surprised if I run into you at the store! I enjoy skiing in the winter, basking in the sun on the beach, and am an avid runner - currently training for my third half-marathon. I play soccer on an adult league with my husband, so I might see you soccer players out at KSA on Sunday nights! I love horses, 80's music, ice-cream and anything chocolate. I also happen to be Team Edward...
After substitute teaching for several years at both PGE and KMS, I accepted a full-time teaching position at KMS as a 6th grade math teacher in the Fall of 2011. I hold a bachelor's degree in mathematics and even though I hadn't used it in almost 8 years (I decided to become a stay at home mom and raise my kids after graduation), I have found it to come in handy recently! Who doesn't just LOVE math?!?!?!
My goal for this year is to grow each and every child from where they started at the start of the year. Growth will vary for each student, as I realize that everyone of my students are diverse learners. The deciding factor will be the amount of work your child is willing to put in. I set very high expectations in my classroom and will require your child to put forth their very best effort at meeting those expectations. I do not expect all students to make straight A's (although that would be great!), but I do expect all students to do their very best ALL of the time.
I will do my very best to make myself available for whatever needs your child may have. I promise to treat your child the way I want my own children to be treated by their teachers. I have an "open door" policy and welcome any type of communication that you prefer: phone call, email, or a visit in person. I am here and willing to work with you and your child to give them every opportunity at success. But what you must remember, is that I can only do so much, and can only lead your child so far before they must practice what they have been taught and complete the journey on their own.
I look forward to meeting each and every one of you throughout the year as times present themselves. Please feel free to contact me at the school or through email for any question or concerns you may have. Together, we can do this!
