Michael Smith, School Counselor

I have been in education since 1978.  I taught in theGreenville City School System prior to coming to Winston-Salem in 1980.  I have been a school counselor with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth county Schools at the elementary or middle school level for 30 years.  I have been at Kernersville Middle School since the school opened in 1998.

Other Information

I coordinate several programs for KVMS Students:

The School Assistance Team (SAT)

Academically/Intellectually Gifted (AG) testing

National Junior Honor Society

Academically/Intellectually Gifted Program

The Academically/Intellectually Gifted Program (AIG) recognizes and addresses the educational needs of students who have met high standards academically and have a high aptitude score. Academically/Intellectually gifted children perform or show the potential to perform at substantially higher levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment.

I coordinate the screenings and evaluations for the AIG program. Students are referred for testing by their parents or teachers. Students who have been identified as gifted in other school systems are also referred for evaluation. Testing sessions are scheduled quarterly by the school system. Testing is offered at district-wide testing sessions. Click Useful Links for more information.

 School Assistance Team

The School Assistance Team (SAT) is multidisciplinary team made up of teachers, administrators, and support staff.  The team meets to review students who teachers or parents have referred as being unsuccessful in the regular classroom.  Our team assists teachers in developing modifications and intervention strategies within the regular education program.  The School Assistance Team is also the initial step in the identification process for the Exceptional Childrens' programs such as Specific Learning Disabilities, Mentally Handicapped, or Other Health Impaired.

National Junior Honor Society

This prestigous organization recognizes students who excel in scholarships, character, leadership, service, and citizenship. Members participate in chapter service projects as well as their own individual service projects.

To be considered for membership, students must have a 3.0 GPA for the current school year. Students' discipline record is also reviewed. All students who have the required GPA are invited to apply. Applications are given during 3rd quarter. Completed applications are reviewed for membership by a Faculty Council.
