Happy Thanksgiving Week!
My heart is warmed by the overwhelming dedication of the band families at West Forsyth, and for you, I am very grateful.  I give thanks to all of you for the unfathomable amount of time you've put in (and in all likelihood will continue to put in!) for the band. I am inspired by each of you daily, and the fullness I feel --because of you-- is why I give thanks this holiday.  I hope you all have a wonderful time with family and friends this week and enjoy some much needed rest.  

November 27, 2012 -- Combined Concert with UNCG
The Wind Ensemble will be in Greensboro on Tuesday to share a concert with the UNCG Symphonic Band.  Parents, I have reserved 125 tickets for your use, which will be available first come first serve at the Aycock auditorium box office the evening of the concert. Please contact me if you would like to chaperone. The timeline is as follows:
10:30 a.m.       Load Buses with instruments and concert attire and Depart
11:30 a.m.       Lunch

12:30 p.m.       Arrive at Aycock Auditorium

1:00 p.m.         Observe UNCG Wind Ensemble rehearsal

NYC Trip Enrollment Begins November 26,2012
Students are invited to enroll in the NYC trip on my teacher website using the following timeline:
Seniors Monday, November 26th
Juniors Tuesday, November 27th
Sophomores Wednesday, November 28th
Freshmen Thursday, November 29th
Open Enrollment Friday, November 30th.
Enrollment closes December 1
Once the first 50 seats are filled, remaining students who enroll will be on a wait-list until 50 seats on the second bus are filled.  It will be cost prohibitive to take a second bus unless the majority of the seats are filled.

The first payment will be due at the December concert for $175.
Second payment will be due January 31st for $250.

Payments will be accepted by check and credit card.
Fundraising proceeds will be applied to the final payment unless you have raised enough funds to cover other payments.  A form will be completed at the December concert to confirm fundraising amounts earned by each student and how it should be applied to the payment schedule.
There are very limited chaperone spots available (2-6 total).  If you are interested in chaperoning, please email me with the best number for you to be reached and I will talk through chaperone duties and responsibilities with you before you request to chaperone.
All-District Honors Band Audition Registration/Fee Due December 1st
District band auditions are January 5, 2012.
The online registration (http://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/Page/10294) and fee is $10, due December 1, 2012.  Checks should be made payable to West Forsyth High School.
The clinic is in Winston-Salem this year (no hotel expense!) February 1-3, 2012.
After school tutoring is available (for free!).  Students, please put in the time to be successful at your audition!

Wind Ensemble is hosting THE CEDAR RIDGE WIND SYMPHONY tomorrow for the first ever collaboration concert.
Schedule is as follows:

US ARMY RECOGNITION CEREMONY FOR LANE WAGNER, NOVEMBER 15TH, 2:15PM, PAC
Lane Wagner, a member of the color guard, has been selected as a member of the 2013 US Army All-American Marching Band.  We will recognize him at an official recognition ceremony being held in the PAC 2:15pm-2:45pm.  Please come out and share in this celebration, all are invited!

Wind Ensemble Concert TONIGHT, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2012
Only students from 3A are participating in this concert, but all are welcome to attend!
Students should wear "Sunday Best".
Students MUST be in their seats at 6:30pm to avoid a deduction in their grade.
Concert begins at 7:00pm.
A Band Fans General Meeting will take place at the concert.
The concert should be over by 8:00pm.
Marching Band Playoff Game at Butler Friday
Students should report to the band room after school on Friday.  
We will have a pizza dinner before loading up at leaving at 5:00pm.  
Expected return arrival is around midnight.
We are wearing uniforms and will not be performing the show.
Marching Band Banquet Postponed/Parade Schedule Adjustments
The marching band banquet that was scheduled for this Thursday is being rescheduled.  More information on a new date is coming soon!
The next marching band rehearsal is Thursday, November 8th to prepare for the REQUIRED Veteran's Day Parade.  The Veteran's Day Parade is on November 10th, the report time is 9am, the parade begins at 10am and will run down Fourth street in downtown Winston-Salem.  We should be finished by 12noon.
Please add a parade rehearsal on November 29th from 4-5pm and the Winston-Salem Holiday Parade on December 1st to your calendar.  We met with parade organizers to be assured that logistics would be handled better and security would no longer be an issue.  We want West Forsyth to be represented; the parade is an evening event (starts around 5pm) THANK YOU for adjusting your schedule.  
We will have our final parade rehearsal on December 6th, 4-5pm for the Lewisville Holiday Parade on December 9th (afternoon).

October 22nd All-County Auditions

All-county auditions are being held at East Forsyth MiddleSchool, and begin at 4:30pm.  Allstudents have received a copy of the solo and scales, and should be preparingfor their audition.   A bus will betaking students over but you should plan to have a ride pick you uppost-audition.

October 30th Wind Ensemble Concert

Wind Ensemble will present their fall concert in thePAC.  We will also have our Octobergeneral meeting for the West Forsyth Band Fans that evening.  We encourage all band students to attend thisconcert and support their classmates.

November 12th US Navy Jazz Band (The Commodores) Concert

November 13th Community Partnership Concert

West Forsyth Wind Ensemble and Cedar Ridge High School WindSymphony will present a joint concert as part of Cedar Ridge’s participation inthe North Carolina Music Educators Association State Conference.  We are excited to host Cedar Ridge and lookforward to sharing the stage with such a fine band.

November 15th US Army All American Recognition Ceremony for LaneWagner

Lane Wagner, a member of the West Forsyth Color Guard, hasbeen selected as a member of the 2013 U.S. Army All-American MarchingBand.  He was selected from hundreds ofqualified applicants for outstanding musicianship, marching skill, attention todetail, ability to follow directions, and maturity.  He will receive an all-expenses paid tripfrom December 31st through January 6th 2013, toSan Antonio, Texas where he and his fellow All-Americans will create andperform the half-time program for the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Wewill host the US Army All-American Selection Committee for a selectionannouncement ceremony on November 15, 2:00pm in the PAC.  We are very proud of Lane’s achievement andhope you can attend the event.

November 27th Community Partnership Concert

The West Forsyth Wind Ensemble has been invited to performwith the UNCG Symphonic Band in the historic Aycock Auditorium on the UNCG campus.   Transportation is being provided.  We our very excited to be honored with suchan invitation and hope many of the West Forsyth band families can attend.

Dr. Danny Frye Community Partnership Guest Appearance

Dr. Frye, from High Point University, made two visits toassist the West Forsyth Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensembles and Marching Band.  He will be writing a percussion ensemblepiece for our percussion class, which we plan to premiere at the springconcert.  Dr. Frye is an accomplishedpercussionist, composer and educator; to learn more about him, please check outthis link:

NC Jazz Scholarship

The North CarolinaJazz Scholarship is designed to provide one-time funds for an incoming freshmanstudent who will be majoring in music at a North Carolina college or universityof his or her choice beginning Fall 2013. This is a competitive scholarshipopen to North Carolina high school students graduating in 2013. One to threefinalists will be selected to perform as part of a concert at UNC-Chapel HillMarch 22, 2013, and the scholarship winner will be selected from that group offinalists at the conclusion of the concert. To be eligible, the student musthave been accepted as a music major at a NC university/college music program bythe time of the March competition performance. North Lincoln Results

Congratulations to the West Forsyth Marching Band on awhirlwind of a day this past Saturday.  Iknew it was going to be an exciting day, and exciting it was!  You went up against some very good bands andheld your own!  You’re final score of85.325 reflected the quality we always come to expect of this amazing group ofpeople.  We received excellent feedbackand are in a good place to continue improving going into our second show thiscoming weekend.  Parent volunteers wereAMAZING throughout the entire day. Students, take a moment to reflect on your appreciation for theirefforts and take some time to say “thank you” for helping you be successful.  Everyone truly earned the “ESPRIT DECORPS!”  I am very, very proud!

Order forms were given out to all band students in class.  We ask that all students sell at least 10 chicken pies.  If you are unable to participate in selling pies, we ask that you make a donation instead of $50 to the West Forsyth Band Fans.  We are offering cash prizes to the top 3 sellers over 40.

Senior Night Instructions:

Students should bring a few pictures to be arranged on posterboard where band members will sign and congratulate them on their contributions to the band.  This should be done by THURSDAY.

 

All senior students should complete the Senior Recognition announcement form by FRIDAY.  The announcement form is attached to this email.

 

Senior parents should report to the track at the end of the fence near where the band warms-up when the scoreboard clock says 4:00 in 2ndQuarter.

 

Meet Shari Church at the end of the fence to be lined up alphabetically.

 

Band members will meet their parents after warm-up and walk with them to the track to the 50 yard line prior to their performance.

 

After students and families are recognized, parents will be dismissed to take their seats in the stands to enjoy the performance and students will take the field in performance.

 

Director's Report

September 14, 2012

 

All Band Students:

-All students have been issued a locker and should be on a regular cycle of taking instruments home to practice.  All students will be assessed on the All-County scale requirements by mid-October.  Please refer to class handouts for ranges.

 

-All-County auditions are on October 22, 4:30pm.  Please see Mr. Kirkpatrick or Mr. Spencer if you need a solo or scales.  The registration deadline for All-County is October 12th.

 

-The New York trip is scheduled for April 24-28, 2013.  The approximate cost is $700.

 

-Jamboree advertisement sales have begun.  Students can pay for their entire NYC spring trip using these advertisements.  All artwork and payments should be in by September 28th.  Students earn 100% profit off each ad sold.  Checks should be made payable to West Forsyth Band Fans.  Point of contact is the student selling the advertisement.  An order form is attached to this email for you to print.

-All band families are needed to assist with the WSFCS Jamboree being held on the West Forsyth campus on October 11, 2012.  The event runs from 1:00pm-10pm.  Shifts are available in 2 hour blocks. 

 

-Parents may place orders for shirts and sweatshirts and other gear at the friends and family performance on Saturday.  We also have band calendars available for purchase that include pictures of students.  The calendars are very practical and will make an awesome keepsake.  $10 each.

-We are also seeking a Junior parent to coordinate the Marching Band Social to be held in December.  Please contact Mr. Kirkpatrick for details.
 
Concert Band:
-The concert band program is comprised of 4 performing ensembles:  Percussion Ensemble (1A), Wind Ensemble (3A), Brass Ensemble (3B), Woodwind Ensemble (4B).
-Percussion Ensemble concert attire is black pants, black socks, black shoes and a black top.
-Wind Ensemble concert attire consists of school issued tuxedos/formal dresses, black dress shoes and socks.
-Brass Ensemble and Woodwind Ensemble concert attire consists of black pants/skirts, black socks, black shoes and a school issued golf shirt.
-We ask that all families not participating in marching band contribute a "Fair Share" donation of $50 to cover extra expenses.  If you are not able to pay the $50 Fair Share you can participate in fundraising opportunities.  Checks should be made payable to "West Forsyth Band Fans".
-We have a Spring Trip planned for April to NYC.  Pending acceptance into a national concert band festival, Wind Ensemble students will be taking an additional band trip in March. Percussion, Woodwind and Brass Ensemble students will have multiple opportunities to perform or attend performances throughout NC.
-Private Lessons are strongly encouraged -- a list of West Forsyth endorsed private teachers is attached to this report, as well as other highly qualified teachers in the community.
-School owned instruments will be assigned to students who play Baritone, Tuba, Bari Sax, Bass Clarinet, Tenor Sax, Bassoon or Oboe.  There is a rental fee for each instrument. 
-All other students should have their own fully functioning instrument. 
-All students are responsible for having their own valve oil, slide grease, reeds, pencil, cork grease, neck strap, mutes, etc.
 
Jazz Band:
-The Jazz Program at West Forsyth has gone through tremendous growth the past few years. There are now approximately 35 students enrolled in a Jazz Course here at West. 
-There will be 2 performing ensembles: Jazz Combo (2A) and Jazz Ensemble (4A).
-Jazz Ensemble concert attire will be a dark colored suit with a dress shirt, tie, and dress shoes.
-Jazz Combo concert attire will be black pants, black socks, black shoes and a black top.
-We ask that all families not participating in marching band contribute a "Fair Share" donation of $50 to cover extra expenses. If you are not able to pay the $50 Fair Share you can participate in fundraising opportunities.  Checks should be made payable to "West Forsyth Band Fans". This only applies if you are not already paying a Fair Share fee for being a part of the Concert Band Program. 
-We have a Spring Trip planned for April to NYC.  Along with this there will be several performances for the Jazz Ensemble throughout North Carolina. We are looking into participating in the UNC Jazz Festival in Chapel Hill this year! Both the Jazz Ensemble and Combo will be giving regular concerts throughout the school year. 
-With the huge success of hosting "The Airmen of Note" last year we are looking into hosting another military band this year!
-Private Lessons are strongly encouraged -- a list of West Forsyth endorsed private teachers (focusing on Jazz) is attached to this report, as well as other highly qualified teachers in the community.
-School owned instruments will be assigned to students who play Drumset, Bass, Piano, Tenor Sax, Bari Sax, and Bass Trombone. There is a rental fee for each instrument. 
-All other students should have their own fully functioning instrument.  
-All students are responsible for having their own valve oil, slide grease, reeds, pencil, cork grease, neck strap, mutes, etc.

WEST FORSYTH BAND FUNDRAISING

·      Fourth of July Fundraiser—Thanks to all the volunteers who sold food, drinks & merchandise at Lewisville Town Commons on July 4th.  This event netted nearly $1200.

·      Chicken Pie Sale—This fundraiser is run by a few volunteers who coordinate the sale of chicken pies provided by Mrs. Pumpkins of Pfafftown.  Each student is given a packet with order sheets during the month of September.  Orders will be collected in two waves—mid October and mid November.  Volunteers are needed during late afternoon and/or evening hours for distribution of pies on 3-4 specified dates.  Chairperson for 2012:  Deanna Sizemore   Contact:  dsizemore@wakehealth.edu

·      Car Washes—This opportunity for a Saturday morning fundraiser, usually held in the fall, is open to any parent willing to supervise and coordinate a one-day event.  Advance Auto in Clemmons donates their facility and water.  Contact:  Carole Hiller (carole.hiller@gmail.com)

·      Yard Sale—This event needs a committee chair for spring 2013 or it will be postponed this year.  Items are collected over the course of several weeks in mid-March, with the one-day event being held on a Saturday in early April.  In addition to a Committee Chair, volunteers are needed to organize items the evening prior, as well as working the day of the sale.  Contact:  Carole Hiller  (carole.hiller@gmail.com)

·      Jazz Dinner Gala & Silent Auction--  This fundraiser is a special evening out (in early May) for the band booster supporters and community, held at the Piedmont Club in W/S, involving dinner, performance by the West Forsyth Jazz Band and a silent auction.  Volunteers are needed beginning in February 2013 to solicit donations from local merchants for the silent auction, as well as solicitation of corporate/table sponsors/tickets.  Chairperson for 2013:  Carole Hiller  (carole.hiller@gmail.com)

·      Credit Card Point--Direct Donation—This fundraiser will give you, your friends and family the opportunity to make a tax deductible contribution to West Forsyth Bands without spending a PENNY!!!  Volunteers to help initiate this opportunity needed.  Contact:  Carole Hiller (carole.hiller@gmail.com)
